On 25 April 2024, Madras Management Association (MMA) and Rajah & Tann co-organised a hybrid event titled “Arbitration in the Age of Globalisation: Navigating Cross-Border Disputes in India’s Business Landscape” in India.
The seminar explored the challenges and opportunities presented by globalisation in the context of arbitration with a focus on handling disputes within India’s business landscape. The speakers delved into the key features of arbitration as a mode of dispute resolution, including its legal framework and procedures. They also looked at recent developments in international arbitration in India and shared effective strategies for resolving disputes in an increasingly interconnected world.
The speakers included Avinash Pradhan, Co-Head of the South Asia Desk and Deputy Head of the International Arbitration Practice, V Bala, Deputy Head of the Shipping & International Trade Practice, and Jainil Bhandari from the same Practice, who explained the advantages of arbitration vis-à-vis litigation, the difference between institutional and ad hoc arbitration, and concepts of seat of arbitration and finality of awards, among others.
